    A __hydraulic jump__ is the point in a flow at which the __Froude №__ (__v/√(gh)__, where __g__ is acceleration due to gravity, __v__ is the speed of flow, & __h__ is the water-depth, & __√(gh)__ is the __Froude velocity__ – roughly-speaking the ‘waterwave’ equivalent of the speed of sound) changes from __>1__ to __<1__ . One of these can be observed in actuality at the foot of a gently-sloping weïr in a river: the water at the foot of the weïr has been accelerated to highly ‘supercritical speed’ – ie having __Froude № > 1__ – by its descent down the slope, & then at a hydraulic jump, at which there is a great deal of churning & foaming of the water, the river suddenly returns to its usual depth & speed.

    A hydraulic jump is roughly equivalent to a standing shock in aerodynamics; & the equations governing it are roughly analogous to the __Rankine-Hugoniot jump equations__ that govern an aerodynamic shock.
