  1. Other people in the comments of the original post say it’s a transformer that blew up, but [this comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/NatureIsFuckingLit/comments/njnod9/lighting_rain_saint_petersburg_russia_2021/gz95w1t?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3) from the original post cites an article in The Sun that says that lighting struck some trolley wires overhead.
    >>`According to local reports, the phenomenon occurred after a lightning bolt struck trolley bus wires.`

    >>
`The powerful electric discharge caused the explosion and sparks.`

    >>
`No one is believed to have been hurt during the incident.`

    >>This explanation from “The Sun”.

  2. Transformers are filled with mineral oil for cooling. When there is a fault that causes them to explode, it explodes because the heat instantly boils the oil and it’s the pressure that makes the top pop off and burning hot oil shoot out and rain down.

The other possibility is a the wire melted in the flash and that’s all molten aluminum or copper raining down.

  3. I’ve seen it on VK (russian social network). It said the lightning hit a metal roof, breaking off some melted pieces that you can see here.
