  1. The transformer is a cylinder therefore the ends are circular openings. If you have a sudden release of pressurized gas (like from a small explosion for instance) through a circular opening and the atmospheric conditions are right (very little to no wind) then it will produce a vortex ring which is what you are seeing here.

    A few YouTube channels have done videos explaining and playing with this. I think Physics Girl was one and Veritasium was another. There was someone else I think who did some experiments with changing the shape of the opening and got some interesting results. Might have been NightHawkInLight or Smarter Everyday.

  2. I wonder if this is responsible for some UFO sightings? Especially if it happened at night and was lit from below my the electrical fire.

  4. Same thing happens when you light a Bic lighter for less than a second. Don’t just flash the flint, light the flame for a solid 0.3 seconds then release the button and a satisfying ring will float up.
