This kind of thing is why you ALWAYS tape up the contacts on lithium batteries (and any battery greater than 9.6 volts) when you ~~throw them away~~ recycle them, no matter what size they are. AAA, AA, 9V, even coin batteries and power tool battery packs.
Your local battery store will likely accept any batteries you have for recycling for free, unless it’s an absurd amount.
I accidentally threw a lithium battery into a fire once. Once. It sounded like three 12 gauges were going off simultaneously and blew a flaming ball of metal about 50 feet away. My husband was not pleased.
