  1. Probably caused by scattering of light from metal nanoparticles (gold or silver). A typical dye absorbs some colors of light, and the other colors are transmitted through. These nanoparticles tend to scatter a lot of light instead of absorbing it. So if you look side-on, you see the color of light that is scattered, while if you look through it, you see the colors that aren’t scattered or absorbed.

    A similar phenomenon [can be seen in milk]( (where small particles of fat and protein scatter light). Dilute milk with a little water and shine a bright light through it. The transmitted light will be orangish/reddish because the blue light is scattered more strongly.

  2. Looking through little bit and then looking through lots? It’s the same as glass… It looks perfectly clear but when you look through the edge across it you can see its green.
